We are in real danger of losing a very trusted and valuable tool that we use to raise corn. One of the tools we use, the herbicide atrazine, is again coming under pressure by people whose knowledge is very questionable. But, the EPA is allowing these people's claims to cause a re-evaluation of atrazine outside the normal procedures. This unplanned review of atrazine is without precedent and not needed.
Atrazine has been used and studied for more than 50 years. This product is the most studied herbicide in history. We as dealers and you our farmer customers are the primary handlers of this product. We all live in the areas that are treated with atrazine and we raise our families here. We need safe products to use and atrazine has been proven to be one of the safest.
There is no good substitute for atrazine in corn production. Without this product it would be very difficult and expensive to grow corn in our no-till farming. This product is used on over half of all the corn grown in the U. S. as well as over 60% of the grain sorghum. It is estimated that the loss of atrazine would cost corn growers in the U.S. over $2 billion. We cannot afford for this to happen.
There is a group, the Triazine Network, made up of farmers and ranchers such as you. If you want to keep this valuable herbicde I urge you to join this group and try to push the EPA back to business and follow their establised guidelines. More than 50 years and thousands of studies should carry some weight in regulating this product.
